Sequence of Tenses.
Direct and Indirect Speech.
Sequence of Tenses: When the predicate of the Principle clause of a sentence is in the Past Tense, the predicate of the Subordinate clause is in the Past one too.
When a sentence changes from Direct Speech to Indirect Speech, it is introduced by a verb in the Past Tense (he said that…). All the verbs are changed from Present Tense to Past Tense.

“I am unhappy”. Polly said that she was unhappy.

Conversational Topic “My Family”
The first monologue of Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark:
“I am Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark. My mother is Gertrude. She is beautiful. I had a father. He died. And my mother married again. Her new husband is my uncle Claudius. My mother was good, but now she is not in accordance with a well-known proverb “Husband and wife have the same interests and views.” My uncle Claudius is a bad man and he wants to kill me. I am alone: no family, no true mother, no friends! But maybe I’ll have my own family. I love Ophelia. And she loves me.”

Conversational Topic “My Biography”
I suppose the first thing I must tell you is my name.
So, I am Cinderella. I am a French girl. I was born in XVII century. My father was Perrault. I have stepmother and two stepsisters. When I was not married to Prince, they mocked at me. Now they live with me in the palace and nurse my children. I have a son and a daughter. My best friend is miss magic and I am going to become a clever fairy in the future. I want to help all poor girls of the world.
Lesson 18
Conversational Topic “Character”
Once upon a time there lived an old man who liked the quests. And the name of that old man was Character. The best quest of Mr. Character was Mr. Clever. He always came with limerick-presents and presented the host. For example, this one:
Try to guess why little Lily
Says that Jim is very silly!
- I don’t know, - Mr. Character answered.
Because Jim is red as a carrot,
And he is dull as a parrot.
The second guest was Mr. Kind. He constantly said: “Anger is a sworn enemy.” And added: “An angry man opens his mouth and shuts his eyes.”
- Who was said it? – once Mr. Character asked.
- This is a folk wisdom. You know: all “proverbs are the wisdom of the streets.”
The third guest is Mr. Sly. He often said: “With foxes we must play the fox.”
- Is it your motto? – Mr. Character said.
- Yes, it is!
The fourth guest…
Well, my dear friends, continue this fairy tale as quick as possible. It is your first task!
The second task is as follows:
Make up the dialogues between:
- Mr. Blockhead and Mr. Clever;
- Miss Chatter-Box and Mr. Taciturn (Silent);
- Mr. Boastful and Miss Modest;
- Mr. Coward and Mr. Brave;
- Mr. Industrious (Hard-working) and Mr. Lazy-bones;
- Mr. Liar and Mr. Fair.
Make up the dialogues and play out them!!!
